What it is

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. Instead of acting on the surface, it focuses energy at a specific depth beneath the skin and creates heat points there. That controlled heat contracts the existing fibres — which is what gives the initial tightening — and switches on the production of new collagen, which is what holds the result over time.

It is one of the few non-invasive treatments that reach deep layers without breaking the skin. No needles, no cuts and no crusting: you leave with your face looking the same, perhaps a little red.

Its territory is mild to moderate laxity: a jawline that has been slipping, a jaw that no longer draws itself, a neck starting to give. If the laxity is significant and there is a lot of excess skin, the honest answer is that this will fall short.

Who it is for

  • A facial contour starting to lose definition
  • A soft jawline and the beginnings of a double chin
  • A neck that has lost firmness
  • Cheekbones that have dropped
  • Anyone who wants a tightening effect without theatre and without needles

Better to wait, or to check first, if…

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • A pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device
  • Metal implants, plates or prostheses in the area to be treated
  • Thyroid conditions, goitre or nodules in the neck: the thyroid area is not treated, and the rest of the neck only with your doctor’s go-ahead
  • Recent fillers, thread lifts or botulinum toxin in the area: margins have to be respected and the order decided
  • Infections, wounds, an active herpes flare-up or active inflammatory acne in the area
  • Autoimmune disease in an active phase and ongoing cancer treatment
  • Epilepsy and uncontrolled diabetes
  • A tendency to keloids, and altered sensation in the area
  • Current or recent isotretinoin
  • Significant clotting disorders or anticoagulant treatment, without medical clearance
  • Severe laxity with a lot of excess skin: that calls for a surgical assessment

If you have an implant, prosthesis or device, say so even if it seems unrelated to your face. And if you are under follow-up for your thyroid, say that too: it decides whether the neck can be worked at all.

The session, step by step

  1. 01

    Assessment and mapping

We study where your face has given way and mark the working map on the skin. Nothing is fired blind.

  2. 02

    Cleansing and conductive gel

The skin is cleaned and the gel that carries the ultrasound is applied.

  3. 03

    Line by line

The face is worked in lines and sectors, changing depth by area: the cheekbone is not the neck.

  4. 04

    Checking

We check the balance between the two sides of the face before finishing.

  5. 05

    Calming and aftercare

The skin is calmed, sun protection goes on and you take the aftercare with you.

What it feels like

Brief, deep pinpricks of heat, sharper over bone — jaw, cheekbone, forehead — and easier elsewhere. It is uncomfortable in moments rather than continuously painful, and the intensity can be dialled down if it is too much. Afterwards the area can feel tender to the touch.

Before and after

Before you come

  • Come without makeup, or expect your face to be cleansed
  • Avoid strong sun in the days before
  • Tell us if you have had fillers, threads or toxin and when: it changes the planning
  • No acids or retinol in the days before

After the session

  • You may leave red and with a feeling of heat: it settles on its own
  • It is normal for the area to feel tender under pressure for a few days
  • High sun protection every day
  • Avoid the sauna, very hot baths and intense exercise that day
  • Drink water and moisturise as usual

When you see it

There is a tightening effect you notice early, and another — the one that actually matters — that arrives slowly as new collagen forms. That is why HIFU is judged with perspective and comparable photos, not on getting off the couch.

What it does not do

  • It is not a surgical facelift and does not give that result
  • It does not remove fat or slim the face
  • It does not fill wrinkles: it works on firmness, not volume
  • It does not work for every degree of laxity: with too much skin, it does not reach
  • It does not deliver its full result immediately: the good part takes time
